This course to introduce students to the role of armed conflict in the historical development of the US; trace the development and role of specific military institutions within the US; account for the development of attitudes towards the use of military force; analyse the political, economic and social role of the military in the contemporary US. At the end of the topic, the student should be able to understand the historical development of the armed forces as a social institution in the US; understand the social and economic context in which decisions about the size, form and utilisation of the armed forces are made; analyse the debates over the role of the armed forces in American society. The criteria for the successful completion of the topic are satisfactory performance in tests of relevant general knowledge; satisfactory performance in written exercises testing research and analytical skills; and satisfactory participation in tutorial discussion.
