This course provides students with a balanced perspective of chemical science which will enable them to understand and interpret the chemistry of their surroundings. Chemistry is an experimental science and laboratory work is an essential part of the syllabus. In this course students will study the properties of selected elements and compounds as examples of groups of substances with similar properties. They will also study the theories which help to explain these properties. A substantial part of the course will investigate the reactions which occur between substances, both qualitatively and quantitatively. Some of the areas covered include atomic theory, rates of reaction, equilibrium, the periodic table, acids and bases, oxidation and reduction reactions, electrochemistry and carbon chemistry.
This College specializes in providing educational opportunities for adults returning to education, those wishing to improve their educational qualifications or those who wish to take part in their adult continuing education short courses. In addition, to these courses, a variety of programs are offered for international students wishing to gain entry into university or TAFE.
