About the institution
Sociology and Anthropology is an area of study for students with a particular interest in relationships and the complexity of cooperation, conflict and communication which constitutes any society. Both Sociology and Anthropology explore the social and cultural realities of life in all its forms. Studying Sociology and Anthropology gives you the opportunity to think creatively and critically about the connections that shape everyday lives. It has an enduring interest in the ways human beings make meaning in an uncertain and unequal world.

The School of Social Sciences and International Studies offers a diverse programme where you may choose courses in sociology, social anthropology, cultural theory, cultural studies, feminist theory, sociological approaches to communication and the public media, political sociology and policy-related studies. These courses are informed by ongoing research that staff members conduct in Australia and internationally.

The new UNSW Bachelor of Arts (BA) is designed to equip graduates with the skills and attributes they will need in an unpredictable global economy. Relaunched in 2009 with the introduction of a more contemporary programme, there are 33 majors and minors available that provide the opportunity to choose from:

- traditional and emerging disciplines in the humanities and social sciences;
- a broad range of interdisciplinary areas and
- options from other faculties

The BA is a versatile degree that offers breadth and flexibility, allowing you to choose what direction your degree will take you both academically and professionally. It is structured so that you have the opportunity to specialise in two areas of study. At the end of the first year you select the areas to focus on during your upper years. Strong emphasis is placed on the importance of language studies for global careers, with options in Asian and European languages which range from introductory to advanced levels.

The BA is a three-year degree in which students complete in-depth studies in one area of study (major), a second area of studies (either a second major or a minor) and electives from other areas of interest.

Majors and Minors

A major is the most in-depth area of study you can undertake in the BA, usually comprised of eight or nine courses over three years. A minor is also an in-depth area of study, comprising fewer courses than a major. Students are able to take one major or minor from another faculty.

Combined Programmes
UNSW is well recognised for offering a diverse array of combined degree programmes. Combined degree programmes provide the opportunity to complete two degrees concurrently and broaden graduate options. Many students at UNSW include the BA as one half of their combined programme.
