With rapidly changing fashion trends, eyewear technology and an ageing population, well-trained optical dispensers are needed to meet the demands of this growing industry in Australia. This qualification covers the professional, technical and retail skills to fit spectacles and contact lenses following prescriptions written by ophthalmologists or optometrists.
Students learn about various specifications of lenses, the physiology of the eye, edging and fitting, contact lenses, a typical prescriptions and practice management skills. On completion, students will be able to apply a wide range of diagnostic and customer service skills within their current role or find employment in small boutique eyewear stores, or with a large retail eyewear chain.
The flexible delivery of this qualification suits students living in remote regional areas. A well-equipped optical laboratory is available at the Cairns TAFE Campus for students requiring off the job experience.
The Cairns TAFE Campus is situated in the heart of Cairns, located in the western suburb of Manunda approximately 4 km from the city centre. Surrounded by tropical gardens, the campus provides a friendly, relaxing environment.
It is conveniently located close to all major public facilities including shopping centres, Cairns international airport, train station, shipping ports and bus terminals. Public transport is available to and from the campus.
