This course is a vocational education program intended primarily as a transition from school to employment, providing an introduction to the trade level of the manufacturing and engineering industries. The program is designed for students to acquire skills and knowledge required to enter into apprenticeship in the Boliermaking, Sheetmetal and Welding Fields. Competencies in this qualification are also common to a number of engineering trades.

SkillsTech Australia is the lead TAFE institute for training in automotive, building and construction, manufacturing and engineering, electrical/electronic and sustainable technologies throughout Queensland. It commenced trading as a Registered Training Organisation. SkillsTech Australia, a key component of the government's $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan, was created as part of a multi-faceted response to Queensland's skills shortages by modernising the way trade and technician training is delivered throughout the state. Working closely with industry to ensure relevance, SkillsTech Australia is reviewing and redesigning trade and technician programs to suit both the needs of the learner and industry's needs for innovative, technology-driven, efficient and flexible training. SkillsTech Australia assumed responsibility for all metropolitan Brisbane trades training facilities, staff and students, regardless of which training centre the training is being delivered.
