This introductory unit provides a conceptual overview of the history, purposes and functions of the major agencies in the Australian criminal justice system, especially with respect to Police, Courts and Corrections. The unit is specifically designed as a preparation for more advanced studies within the criminal justice field. Topic Areas: History and objectives of punishment; advent and reforms of prisons; history of policing; policing issues and perspectives; hierarchy, role and functions of the Australian court system.
