About the institution
A research degree awarded for a thesis considered to be a substantially original contribution to the subject concerned. Some coursework may be required (mainly in the form of seminars) but in no case is it a major component. Applicants should normally hold a masters degree or a bachelors degree with firts or high second class honours of the University of Sydney or an equivalent qualification from another university or institution. Minimum period of candidature is 2 years for candidates holding a masters degree or equivalent or 3 years for candidates holding a bachelor's degree with first class or second class honours. Maximum period of candidature is normally 4 years. The first 12 months of candidature is normally on probation.

Research areas - All aspects of the economics of agriculture, natural resources, and development; applied microbiology and biotechnology, climate change, carbon accounting and digital soil mapping, environmental risk management, food processing, plant breeding and plant molecular genetics, sustainable crop production systems, sustaining land and water resources and catchment hydrology; agronomy, crop physiology and nutrition, farming systems, irrigation, precision agriculture, decision support; plant disease, entomology, weeds, plant protection; production horticulture, postharvest, amenity horticulture; agricultural biotechnlogy, quality attributes and processing, food chemistry and biochemistry; soil - soil chemistry, soil physics, pedology, pedometrics, soil contamination, precision agriculture; water - hydrology, water quality; native and agricultural ecosystems, managing vegetation, biodiversity, nutrient cycles, soil fertility.
