This course aims to further develop basic reading skills, using authentic written Indonesian language from newspapers and magazines articles, poems and short stories, to extend speaking skills in short discussions based on the themes or related issues familiarto students as covered in the reading text, to expose students to wide range of interesting social themes in contemporary Indonesia and to build students' vocabulary in Indonesian through reading and follow up language activities, to expose students to applied grammar by analysing the reading texts through explanation and exercises involving Indonesian grammar, to train students to apply the sentence structures and appropriate grammatical points in guided writing exercises, to enable students to listen to and get the gist of spoken informal Indonesian language through feature movie clips and short audio and audio visual material. By the end of the semester students are expected to gain more confidence in using the Indonesian language, be able to use reading, writing, speaking, and listening strategies more effectively, be able to gain a better understanding of cultural background of Indonesian society and reflect on their own society, be able to develop analyse more deeply and accurately social issues related to the themes in the reading texts, be able to assimilate 25 new words a week, be able to write a summary and/or commentary, review, and short report of around 350 - 500 words in Indonesian on familiar topic read and/or topic discussed by the class, be able to converse in Indonesian more at ease in personal level and in basic social level, and be able to use correctly the grammatical structures covered in this semester, namely the active and passive voice, imperatives and passives imperatives, and ber- prefix.
