The Master of Applied Science (Microscopy and Microanalysis) is part of an articulated award program that provides a professional qualification to microscopists for industry, research, medical science and education. The course develops and enhances skills in specimen preparation, operation of microscopes and analytical equipment, interpretation of microscopical images and microanalysis.
Microscopy and microanalysis is the science of measuring the structure and composition of biological or physical materials and relating these to their properties and functions. For example, microscopy is fundamental to our understanding of cellular processes and to our understanding of the mechanical behaviour of engineering materials. Microscopy and microanalysis techniques are vital to a wide range of disciplines in both arts and sciences, but few undergraduate degree programs provide a solid grounding in this field.
This course is aimed at those people who wish to develop their understanding and learn practical skills in microscopy and microanalysis. It is suitable for undergraduates who want to obtain additional skills to gain a competitive edge in the employment marketplace or professionals who would like to acquire new skills or obtain a professional qualification in an area related to their current employment.
Microscopy and microanalysis is a fundamental aspect of many areas of research in the medical, biological and physical sciences. A wide range of professions can benefit from microscopy experience, for example, forensic and medical scientists, biotechnologists, geologists, chemists, archaeologists, metallurgists, materials engineers, mechanical and other engineering professionals. This course can also be used as a stepping stone to PhD research.
