Applied Linguistics is a field which explores how language functions in the world, first and second language acquisition and intercultural communication. This online degree will appeal to students wanting a professionally relevant higher qualification who do not have a background in Linguistics, as well as those considering postgraduate careers in the growing fields of Applied Linguistics and TESOL. The degree is fully on-line using Discussion boards and other web-based resources. This online format allows all Masters students to participate equally, regardless of geographic location. The Master of Arts (Applied Linguistics) is primarily a coursework degree. The standard program consists of eight 400-level units each worth six credit points. Students may also be able to undertake 12 credit points of research (LING490) Graduates who have completed 25 per cent of the program with a dissertation unit (12 credit points) may be eligible to apply for the Doctor of Philosophy.
