About the institution
RMIT’s School of Medical Sciences has led the expansion of biomedical research at RMIT and contains within its structure several internationally recognised research groups. The multidisciplinary nature of its scientific base offers opportunities to conduct world class biotechnology and biomedical research. The nature of biomedical research is evolving from discipline-based research into research programs that are collaborative.
For many students, honours is the first step to a career in biomedical research. The honours year is a research project with the major assessment being the presentation of a thesis.
Honours is also a chance to develop skills that provide the basis for a challenging and diverse range of career options.
The honours program is designed to increase the level of skill in areas highly relevant to a career in medical science, whether this is in research or diagnostic services, industry or government.
The school has a multidisciplinary research base that offers opportunities to conduct biotechnology and biomedical research in areas including, but not limited to:
1. applied research: natural products, drug safety, comparative biochemistry and nanotoxicology
2. biomedical science: diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer and osteoporosis
3. exercise sciences: children’s health, healthy lifestyles and sport and exercise sciences
4. medical radiations: imaging, nuclear medicine and radiotherapy.
