This course will examine principles, processes, issues and practices underlying strategic land use planning. The focus is on the Victorian planning system in the context of international practice and writings. The subject examines the process of strategic planning in Melbourne, particularly through the metropolitan strategy Melbourne 2030, and at a local level in both a metropolitan and regional context. The main elements of such strategies are examined in the context of integrated land use – transport planning, social, economic and environmental concerns. Strategic planning is related to governance and political frameworks by analysing decision making processes and the reasons for decisions.
