Non-University Institutions

Accredited non-university institutions can award Diplomas and Degrees in Australia, alongside the more traditional universities. Management and Business schools offering MBAs and other qualifications are a thriving example of this sector. Unlike universities, these institutes are not self-accrediting and must be approved in the state or territory in which they operate.

There is not so much focus on research as in a traditional university and most offer vocational courses as well as higher education qualifications. In Australia, nationally recognised qualifications must meet the criteria stipulated by the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). Under the AQF, students can study for a Vocational Education and Training (VET) course or for a Higher Education course.

The following qualifications are considered Higher Education courses:

•    Bachelor
•    Graduate Certificate
•    Graduate Diploma
•    Masters
•    Doctorate (PhD)
A Diploma or Advanced Diploma could be accredited in either the VET or Higher Education sector.
