Hi, I am a first year student at the Australian National University studying a Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Arts. My intended major for Bachelor of Music is Classical Voice and for my Bachelor of Arts, I was hoping to major in Psychology and Art History. However, I have been concerned that both my areas of concentration in my degree are areas that have good employment prospects - it is hard to get a job related to music and with a three year undergraduate degree in psychology, it will also be hard to find a job. I was thinking of swapping my arts major to International Relations as it will hopefully land me a job with the government. This job will support my dream of supporting a career in music. What do you think about this idea? Is International Relations an area that will lead to good employment prospects in Australia and overseas? Katia

Hi Katia,

I would strongly recommend you go to your careers advisor at ANU for this one. As an undergraduate, you are entitled to free career advice and this is the type of query they deal with every day.

I do agree with you that it's a good idea to think about your career options while you are studying. If it's a job to support your music career, there are many courses available both at university and outside of university that could help you achieve your goals, such as a short course that could be completed online in your spare time, or in the holidays.

As for international relations, this may help you get a job in government but governments need many types of people, from many backgrounds. Other subjects such as commerce, business, economics or marketing may be just as useful for finding a job – do a bit of research and talk to your career advisor before making a decision.

Hope this helps,

Sarah
