University of Queensland offers new Policy Practice degree

The University of Queensland is offering a new degree in Policy Practice, which is designed to prepare students for employment in the public sector.

Students enrolled in the new course will have an opportunity to sit in on Question Time, visit policy units in the Queensland Government and undertake tasks such as preparing briefing documents and evaluation reports.

Associate Professor Andrew Hindmoor and former public servant Nonie Malone designed the course.

Professor Hindmoor said: “It is increasingly important for students to be familiar with what is expected of them in a workplace setting.

"This new course will help students hit the ground running when they apply for a job in the public sector as a policy practitioner. Students will benefit from very high levels of support for this initiative from senior leaders in the Queensland Government."

Policy Practice meets a growing need for students to gain valuable experience and insights into a policy career in the public sector, the University of Queensland said.

The course will seek to build upon and strengthen existing links with government, forged through the School of Political Science and International Studies' internship program.
