Other than universities and private education institutions, international students also have the option of pursuing their education at Technical and Further Education (TAFE) institutions. TAFE institutions are government-owned colleges which offer vocational training and practical lessons that are nationally and internationally recognised.
TAFE courses and programmes are tailored to mirror the current skills that are in demand by various sectors and industries. From short courses, certificate courses and diploma programmes, TAFE courses are suitable for international students who want to enhance their employability upon graduation.
How to apply
TAFE institutions are represented by the IDP Group, which is an agent that is owned by a majority of Australian universities, TAFE institutions and private education institutions. You can apply for a placement at the TAFE institute of your choice during an Open Day, which is usually held twice a year in your country.
The basic entry requirement for a TAFE course is a Year 11 or 12 equivalent with a pass in English language proficiency test. Mature age applications with prior work experience can also apply. Some TAFE courses require international students to be above 18 years old.
You may also apply directly to the TAFE institution of your choice, via the TAFE institution's website. TAFE colleges usually have two intakes in an academic year.
What to expect
As TAFE courses encourage practical and hands-on learning; students undergo classroom-based learning and technical learning in a real workplace, or in a stimulated work environment. Certain TAFE courses require students to undergo assessment and accreditation before they are ready for employment.
Higher education pathways
A TAFE education will result in either a nationally recognised certificate or (advanced) diploma. With a TAFE certificate, you can pursue a diploma or advanced diploma in your study field.
International students who have graduated from TAFE institutions with diploma awards can pursue higher education in universities, with advanced credit standings and exemptions, in a relevant course or programme.
