Studying to become a physiotherapist
In order to become a physiotherapist in Australia, students must undertake four years in a Bachelor of Physiotherapy or a Bachelor of Applied Science (Physiotheraphy) at a university. Students can also go on to study a Master of Physiotherapy following their undergraduate qualification.
During their studies, students of physiotherapy can expect to learn the theory, practical and clinical placement components required to give them a strong understanding of the body, as well treatment techniques. Following their qualification, students of physiotherapy must apply for registration with the Physiotherapists Registration Board for their state. Without this registration, physiotherapy graduates cannot practice.
Working as a physiotherapist
According to the ABS Census of 2006, physiotherapists can expect to earn between $1,150 and $1,450 per week full time, depending on their employee and working conditions. Demand is strong for physiotherapists, as it is for all health professionals. Most physiotherapists work regular hours during the week, though once again this is dependent on which area they are working in.
