Adult education centres exist which can equip students with skills to apply gardening design and landscape design to an environment, and care for their garden too.

Skills to learn

Gardening design is about creating a garden that is right for the owners, including size, types of foliage, aesthetic look, and lifestyle. Plants need to suit their climate, the amount of sun available and the type of soil you are planting in. Landscape design is the design of a garden to combine aesthetic, architectural and horticultural elements to create a pleasing arrangement of plants and elements in your garden.

Gardening skills to learn are endless, with topics from beginner to expert. Areas covered include home propagation, growing vegetables, landscaping home gardens, soils and plants, garden structures and even water and lighting features.

Where to learn gardening skills


Anyone can learn how to apply gardening design and landscape design principles, with courses available across a variety of institutions and skill levels. Courses are available at TAFE institutions with Certificates and Diplomas available in Horticulture, Pruning fruit trees, Garden Design fundamentals – the list is extensive. Not only this, but community colleges offer adult learning sessions, with night classes available to suit a full time work schedule. Many adult education centres offer certification also, with Diploma and Certificate qualifications available.

Should you wish to extend this further, landscape design courses are available at the university level, with undergraduate and postgraduate degrees available in Landscape Architecture and Environmental Design.
