Choosing the right course to study

Trying to find a course to study after school can be a difficult and lengthy task. Once you know what career is right for you, another big decision must be made in deciding what course to study, and where. Here we have some tips to help you know what course to do, and how to choose your course once you know what career is right for you.

Types of courses

There are two general pathways of ways to study after school, either vocational or academic. Vocational courses are practical, work based courses, which prepare you for work by spending time doing the work under supervision.

Academic courses are based on learning theories and facts, and give you specific knowledge on a subject. Therefore, those who like practical training may prefer a vocational course. Those who enjoy studying and research based work would be better suited at a university or TAFE.

Different modes of study

There are also many modes of study for those who need more flexibility. Many universities offer distance learning via the internet. Evening courses are available for those who need to work full time to support themselves. Universities and TAFEs also offer courses either full time or part time depending on how quickly you wish to complete your study.

Researching your choices

Some careers have proscribed courses that you must complete before being able to work in the field. For example, becoming a doctor requires a university degree and you cannot practice without it. Likewise, a builder cannot learn his craft without first undertaking at least an apprenticeship. Therefore it is crucial to do your research to know what qualification may be a requirement for your chosen career.

Finding the right course requires a bit of research, as well as an understanding of what you want from your course. As long as you know what you’re looking for, you will be able to choose a course to study that will suit your long term and career goals.
