Studying as a mature age student

The decision to return to study later in life as a mature aged student can be a daunting one. You may wish to return for a number of reasons, including advancing your career, updating your skills, learning a new topic, or simply for the enjoyment of learning.

However, there are many questions that will be raised when you decide to return to adult education. What course will be right for you? How will you juggle work and study? There is no one answer for anyone returning to adult learning, and it will take some adjustment, but studying as a mature aged student is a highly satisfying experience.

Where to get started

You may find things may have changed a great deal since you last studied. You may need to update your computer skills with a computer course, as most learning providers will require you to be able to operate one. Universities across Australia are very encouraging of education for adults with counselors and contacts on campus who can help you get started.

Most universities will also offer a bridging course if there are prerequisites to your studies, with maths, academic skills, return to study, and computer courses available for those who are getting back into studying again.

Adult education study options

Mature aged students can have different learning styles and requirements for study. Most university degrees, whether undergraduate or postgraduate, will provide a part time study option to accommodate those working full time.

Many courses now provide an online learning component, for ease of contact for students. Adult education centres such as community centres are also available to those who seek less formal education. TAFE providers also offer diploma or certificate study options for those wishing to upgrade their skills in a huge range of areas.

Entry requirements are quite different for mature aged students than for school leavers. It is important to contact the adult education provider to ensure you understand what is required of you.
