When you’re looking for a part time job, it’s not unusual to find that many employers prefer or require their staff to have some sort of training or qualification.
Receptionist jobs, travel and tourism jobs, admin jobs, retail jobs and hospitality jobs are all forms of employment that are easier to secure if you have some training.
If you are new to Australia, it may be difficult to find part time or temporary jobs if your English is not very good. Community centres, language centres and educational institutions all offer English courses. Some of these are free or cheap, and will improve your chances of finding work.
First aid courses are often preferable, or mandatory, if you are going to be working with children. Some employers offer training, or you can book your own first aid course through other (often charitable) organisations like St John Ambulance or the Red Cross. These courses usually take no more than three days and are unlikely to cost more than $500.
Many TAFEs and private institutions offer short courses, night courses and online courses that can assist in finding part time jobs.
If you want work in hospitality, you might want to consider undertaking a Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) course. In some Australian states, anyone who is involved in the retail sale, supply or service of liquor in licensed venues must complete an RSA course.
RSA courses cover a range of topics including problems associated with excessive consumption of alcohol, alcohol and the law and handling difficult customers. Some employers will pay for you to do an RSA course, or you may have to complete one yourself before being hired.
Other TAFE courses and short courses such as barista training, food handling and safety, bartending, commercial cookery and kitchen operations are offered all over the country, face-to-face and online.
If you are looking for a part time administration or reception job, it may help to do a short course to brush up on your computer skills. Information technology courses are offered by most institutions, as are shorter courses covering subject areas like Microsoft Excel, MYOB, PowerPoint for presentations, word processing, file management, and many others. These courses can be found at institutions (that will give you a certificate or diploma) or if you just want to refresh or learn a few new skills, at neighbourhood community centres.
