Some scholarships cover the cost of your fees, some provide assistance with accommodation and others are available if you are already studying at the institution and want to undertake a special project or exchange. Companies sponsoring awards may also offer the recipient valuable work experience.
Check with your institute or on the My Future website to find out if you meet any of the criteria for an award or scholarship.
Am I eligible for a scholarship?
The Commonwealth Scholarships Program provides financial support to eligible Australian students from low socio-economic backgrounds, particularly those from rural and regional areas, and Indigenous students.
Most universities offer undergraduate scholarships to students who performed outstandingly in Year 12. Some universities also provide scholarship programs on the basis of academic ability and leadership potential, a passion for community involvement, or for men and women studying in 'non-traditional' fields – such as women in engineering, for example.
While most international students are full-fee paying students, there are several university scholarships offered by the Australian government, education institutions and international and charitable organisations.
These scholarships cover vocational education and training, student exchanges, undergraduate and postgraduate study and sometimes English language training.
Most universities also offer a postgraduate scholarship, often called a research scholarship.
How do I apply for a scholarship?
If you are applying for a scholarship based on financial hardship or disadvantage, you may need to apply through Centrelink.
Applications for merit-based or performance-based scholarships usually need to be submitted to the educational institution. However, if you are applying because of outstanding Year 12 results you may need to apply through the organisation that gave you your results. For example, in Victoria you need to apply through the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC).
To apply for any scholarship, first check that you meet all the criteria. You will need to submit an application form before the deadline, which can be found on your higher education provider's website, on Centrelink's website or your tertiary admissions centre's site.
