How to get into the medical profession

Health jobs within the medical profession are greatly varied, and an important part of Australia’s infrastructure. The Australian Bureau of Statistics last quoted the total employment of persons working in medical practices was 101,957, and demand for health professionals is set to increase.

Whether you want to work in pharmacy, nursing, mental health, psychiatry, medicine or health care it is important to undergo the correct training and gain a suitable education for your desired field of work within the medical profession.

Everyone currently working in a hospital, family practice, medical centre or private clinic will have completed at least some level of training or education that has allowed them to enter the medical profession.

In some cases it may be as simple as completing first aid courses – a great way to support community health and also adequate study for work as a St John First Aid Officer or health and fitness instructor. Other occupations require more extensive, specialised training, such as a surgeon working in operating theatres or a psychiatrist caring for patients suffering from depression.

Hands on experience and practical learning are great gateways into work within the medical profession. Studying at a community college, university, an affiliated hospital or TAFE will provide students with the much needed theoretical framework for their chosen profession.

However, skills-based learning is still regarded as one of the most effective ways to gain practical knowledge and prepare for work within a specified medical field. As such, most institutions strive to strike an effective balance between these two types of learning through holistic and varied coursework with placement or internships as a pre-requisite.
