Improving your computer skills

Most workplaces in the current job market require their employees to have basic computer skills. Therefore, it can be difficult for those who do not have much experience with computers to find employment, which can be aided by taking a computer training course.

These can be tailored for the absolute beginner, and teach skills such as editing text, cutting and pasting, using the keyboard and mouse, and other basic computer skills. However, courses also exist that provide more advanced skills, learning programs such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Photoshop, inDesign, or MYOB.

Programs to learn

Classes can be taken for certain computer programs, if you wish to learn something specific. There are certain programs which are very popular, which means more providers exist to teach them. For example, Adobe Photoshop is a program which can be used to retouch and repair images, add lighting and artistic effects, and creative touches to your photos.

Photoshop courses can be taken over a day, weekend, or week, depending on how much you wish to learn. MYOB or ‘Mind Your Own Business’ is a program used in business applications, including invoicing, purchasing, accounts and payroll. This is highly useful for office administrators and those who own their own business. Adobe Indesign is another creative program that is used to create graphic design and desktop publishing, such as brochures, posters, or artwork.

Where to study

Computer courses at all levels are available from online providers, TAFE institutions, and short course providers at adult learning centres. While a qualification is not required for most computer applications, it can certainly make you more employable to hold a Diploma or Certificate in some computer skills.

Computer training courses exist at all levels of knowledge, meaning everyone can have a go and improve their computer skills. Computers are now an integral part of most modern businesses, which means employees need to stay up to date with their computer skills too.
