International students: Finding accommodation

International students can often find it difficult to find affordable student accommodation while studying in Australia. However, there are many different options available to foreign students, with student accommodation arrangements to suit all different personalities and budgets.

Accommodation options in Australia

Students are able to choose from a range of accommodation options in Australia.

Many students in Australia opt to live in shared accommodation, which entails living with a group of housemates in a rental property in order to lower rent and bill costs. Living in shared accommodation can range from $100 to $250 per person, depending on your location and the size of the house. Rental houses can come either furnished or unfurnished, depending on your needs.

Students are also able to live on campus at their institution, by living in a college. Usually colleges are only provided at universities, and the facilities will vary widely depending on which institution you are studying at.

Most colleges will provide food, and all bills will be included in their fees. Living at college is a great way to meet other students, especially for those studying in large faculties where meeting people is more difficult.

Homestays are another option for overseas students, allowing them to have a taste of the Australian lifestyle by living with a family. This involves international students renting a room in a family’s house, with meals and furnishings included in the cost of living.

Usually universities will have a register of families who offer homestay accommodation to international students.

Assistance with finding accommodation

Many TAFE institutes and university providers offer student services and advice, including assistance with finding student accommodation. Some may even help establish you with a homestay linked to the institution itself.
