For students who wish to study health or fitness, choosing to study in Australia is a great way to complete a qualification while experiencing everything this country has to offer. Australia has a host of excellent university and TAFE providers, with a huge variety of courses available to kick start a career in sports and fitness.

What to study in Australia

What an international student may choose to study in Australia can vary widely depending on what area they hope to end up in.

Courses are available at TAFE institutes throughout Australia, from the Certificate to Advanced Diploma level. For example, students could choose to study a Certificate or Diploma in Fitness at TAFE, to give them the skills required to work with clients as personal trainers or coaches. A Certificate or Diploma may take one to two years to complete full time.

International students can also choose to study in Australia at a university. Universities offer a huge range of courses and specialties, at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. An example of a course to study could be the Bachelor of Exercise Science, or a Bachelor of Health Science. These types of programs give students the foundation knowledge required to become an exercise specialist, and may take from three to four years to complete full time.

How to study in Australia

International students need to complete a few steps to be allowed to study in Australia. Firstly, students must apply for a student Visa, by applying to the course of their choice, and if successful will receive an eCOE or electronic Confirmation of Enrolment.

Students should then take this eCOE to their nearest Australian Visa Office to start the process of applying to study in Australia. If successful, the visa will be granted by the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship. Students must be 18 years of age to study, and also must be applying to study a course full time. Students also need to make good academic progress while studying in Australia, and attend at least 80% of scheduled classes.

Studying in Australia is a rewarding experience for international students, and it is well worth finding a course to suit you.
