Australia is home to more tertiary students from the US than any other nationality, and since 2002 around 60,000 American students have travelled to study in Australia. The most commonly studied area for US exchange students is the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences fields.

In 2009, a total of 11,532 American students were studying abroad in Australia, many through a student exchange program. However, 21% of these students completed their full undergraduate or postgraduate degree in Australia.

Many American students prefer studying in either New South Wales or Queensland, with 42% of students studying in New South Wales alone. Australia offers a diverse range of environments to study in, with universities like Bond or Griffith being based right on the beach at the famous Gold Coast in Queensland. Alternatively, universities like the University of Melbourne or the UNSW can offer a taste of Australia’s cosmopolitan city life.
