Master of Theology

The Master of Theology course, also abbreviated interchangeably as ThM or MTh, is a postgraduate program that provides candidates, who already have a qualified degree in theology or master of divinity studies, with the opportunity to specialise in a particular topic within a range of theological issues such as systematic theology, biblical theology or Christian history.

The objectives of the Master of Theology courses aim to enable its graduates to acquire a critical academic understanding of Christian faith and applying it for vocational and ministerial activities.

Undertaking a Master of Theology

Most Master of Theology programs are offered as 2-years, full-time or 4-years, part-time courses. Candidates for the Master of Theology courses are expected to have completed primary degrees in Theology, bible study or divinity study, Christian history or Ministry. Other fields of studies that are usually covered in Master of Theology programs are Historical Theology, Philosophy, Covenant Theology, Christian Worship and Apologetics, which is a study of the evidence and defense of Christianity.

Candidates of the Master of Theology program can choose to undertake a coursework pathway, where they take on studies in biblical and pastoral disciplines, or the research route where students undertake research work to challenge their knowledge within the Christian doctrines, ethics, and history.

The research program also aims to sharpen the students’ interpretive skills of the old and new testaments, covenant theology and natural theology. The Master of Theology by research also prepares the candidate for future doctoral studies, where students are expected to complete a thesis.

Most Christian colleges and universities offer the option of studying for the Master of Theology via distance learning or as an online theology course, on top of the in-attendance mode. The cost of pursuing a Master of Theology varies from the units undertaken for the completion of the Master of Theology program.

Local and domestic students are able to check with the Master of Theology program coordinators for advice on FEE-HELP and other financial support available to undertake their application.
