Melbourne attracts 2,400 IT jobs

Victoria is aiming to become Australia's IT capital, with 2,400 new jobs created within the state so far this year. IT outsourcing firm Vertex recently created 400 IT jobs in Melbourne by establishing its Asia-Pacific headquarters in the city.

The announcement follows the UK company's decision to build a facility in Ballarat, creating 600 jobs.

The Asia-Pacific headquarters based at East Bentleigh will provide IT and business services to companies including technical support, sales and marketing campaigns, project management and customer service.

Minister for Information and Communications Technology, John Lenders, said: "We are clearly Australia’s ICT leader and this announcement demonstrates that Victoria has the best skills, infrastructure and economy for business investment and we are proud to help create thousands of Victorian jobs."

The NBN Co has also recently selected a site in Melbourne's Digital Harbour development for its national operations centre, which will create a further 425 jobs in IT.

The Melbourne facility is scheduled to be up and running early next year before the operation of commercial services in NBN Co’s first release sites.

IT services companies VMware and Enex TestLab also announced an expansion of their operations in Victoria in June, which will lead to the creation of almost 100 new jobs.
