Successfully applying for a student visa is the most important step for overseas students preparing for education in Australia.
How to apply for a student visa
The Australian department of immigration and citizenship grants student visas to international students from more than 190 countries. Student visa requirements depend on assessment level, calculated immigration risk, length of study, level of education and nationality.
Whether it is an English course, TAFE course or a university degree, you will need a letter of offer (LOO) and electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (eCoE) from your education provider before you can apply for your student visa.
You do not need a student visa for courses less than three months in duration.
The Australian immigration department requires some international students to file for their student visas at the Australian Embassy or Consular in their home country.
International students are also sometimes required to undergo a pre-visa assessment before submitting their applications. Refer to the Australian immigration website for more information.
Applicants may also be required to complete a medical check-up from an approved medical screening centre or general practitioner.
Important tips on applying for a student visa
If you intend to study at a private education provider, ensure it is registered with the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS) as the Australian immigration department does not issue refunds on student visas should an education provider default or close down.
There are websites imitating the Australian immigration department's website, aiming to fraudulently capture personal information. Deal directly with the official immigration website to avoid scams.
You are only allowed to apply for your student visa from the 120 days of your official enrolment date. Confirm the enrolment and semester commencement dates with your education provider.
If you are under 18 years old before the course begins, you may need to have a guardian or parent to accompany you until your 18th birthday.
Check with your education agent or the Australian immigration department for the latest updates or your student visa as immigration laws are constantly reviewed.
