Over 1,000 expected to take Victoria Police entrance test

Victoria's campaign to recruit police officers is working, with 1,000 prospective officers expected to take the entrance exam in October – up from the average of 300.

Police Minister Bob Cameron said: "The biggest police recruitment drive in Victorian history is already delivering results, with more than 1000 applicants to sit entrance exams this month alone."

The Extraordinary Career campaign is part of the Brumby Labor Government’s commitment to put an extra 1,966 frontline police on the beat across Victoria.

“There are already more police on the beat in Victoria than ever before and these officers do a wonderful job of protecting their communities by preventing and responding to crime,” Mr Cameron added.

"We have given police record resources, more officers and a broader range of tougher powers to crack down on hoons, knife crime and anti-social behaviour and we will continue supporting police to meet the challenge of keeping the community safe."

The Victorian Government wants to attract police recruits from all walks of life. Recent recruits have come from diverse backgrounds, including accountancy, law and hospitality.

"There can be few more rewarding careers than answering the call of your own community and working to protect fellow Victorians from crime," Mr Cameron said.

The first step to a career in the Police Force is to pass the Education Entrance Exam, which involves spelling and comprehension; mathematics; reasoning; English skills and a writing task.

Candidates who want to brush up on their Maths and English skills can take a short course before sitting the test, known as the Police Preparation or Occupational Preparatory Course.
