Overseas students: Packing for Australia

As an overseas student, it's tempting to try and bring everything you own when moving to a new country as an international student but there are only a few essential items you will need to take.

Some apparently innocent possessions will get you into trouble with Australian Customs, so follow our advice and don't overpack.

Essential items to bring to Australia

Have your list of important numbers and addresses in your hand luggage. You may need to refer to these details upon arrival.

Arrange for a transportation pick-up from the Australian airport to your accommodation and have the details with you. Taxis can be expensive and some shuttle services may not cover your area unless arrangements are made. Your education provider may also provide transportation services.

An international student health coverage package only covers you for certain medical consultations and hospitalisation costs, so consider taking out an additional student insurance policy to cover theft and other losses, including your interstate travel within Australia.

Bring along a multiple plug that will fit the adaptors jacks of your electrical items, and an Australian adaptor.

Don't pack

Australia is an agricultural country and there are strict quarantine laws to protect Australia's eco-system. Food, wooden artefacts, or even muddy shoes could be confiscated on arrival if you have been walking on a farm.

Australian Customs allows certain sealed and vacuumed-packed food from selected countries. Declare these to the Customs officer, as you could be fined or even face prosecution if you fail to declare any prohibited items.

Bringing A$10,000 or more in cash will require a declaration to Australian Customs and a tax may apply.

If you need to bring over a significant sum of money, it is better to convert the amount into a bank draft or transfer the money electronically once you have opened an Australian bank account.

Avoid unnecessary excess baggage charges by buying larger items once you get to Australia. If there are bulky items that you need, consider shipping them instead.
