Pre-apprenticeship courses

Studying a pre-apprenticeship course is a great way for students still in secondary school to begin paving the way into the industry of their choice.

Completing a pre-apprenticeship course will allow students to learn some basic skills, prepare for life in the working environment of their chosen industry, and pave the way to an apprenticeship.

A pre-apprenticeship can be completed in six months and focus on all kinds of specialties, such as mechanics, printmaking, food processing, construction, plumbing, and even aged care.

What is involved in a pre-apprenticeship?

A pre-apprenticeship allows students to combine study at school with paid work and training for their apprenticeship. By completing one unit of their apprenticeship, they may then reduce the length of their apprenticeship once they graduate from high school.

Students are able to study their pre-apprenticeship course like an extra subject through a TAFE institution or Registered Training Organisation (RTO), who usually expect enrolment similar to other TAFE courses. Students who complete a pre-apprenticeship course will usually receive a Certificate II in their chosen industry.

Whilst completing a pre-apprenticeship course through TAFE is not a guaranteed way into an apprenticeship, it is a fantastic way for the graduate to gain an edge when applying to be an apprentice.

More information on pre-apprenticeships

A good website to visit is the Australian Apprenticeships website at www.australianapprenticeships.gov.au. This has information on what you can expect from a pre-apprenticeship, as well as contact details of people who can tell you more.

Students can also contact TAFEs or RTOs directly with a request for information on pre-apprenticeship courses through Compare Courses.

However, a great place to start is within your own school, by talking to your VET Coordinator or careers adviser. A pre-apprenticeship is a great way to learn skills that will serve you well in an apprenticeship, and a great foothold into the industry of your choice.
