Should I go to a TAFE or university?

Many high school graduates and mature aged students find themselves grappling with choosing the right course to study, and whether to study at TAFE or university. Some may be limited by their results in school, or simply unsure of their options.

Choosing the right institution is dependent on which industry you are aiming to work in, though those with a tertiary qualification of some kind, like a Bachelors degree or a diploma, are usually at an advantage over those who do not.

Research your industry

The qualifications you will need are often determined by the industry or career you are looking for. Researching job ads is a good way of establishing what level of qualification you will require to be eligible for the position. You can also talk to a careers adviser, either at school, your potential university, or even a community centre.

You may need to complete a TAFE qualification, a course at university, or undergraduate or postgraduate study before you are employable in the career you want. Every career is different, and some have a clear pathway to their dream job, while others may have more avenues available.

The differences between TAFE and university

A degree at university is usually focused on theory and research based learning, with elective units often available in the subject of your choice. Studying at any of the TAFE institutions, whether at TAFE SA, TAFE WA, Central TAFE, even TAFE Gold Coast, will provide students with teaching focused on small classes, more contact hours, and learning practical skills for work.

Most courses at TAFE and university are offered both full time and part time, and some courses are also offered both on and off campus. The Open Training and Education Network (OTEN) is an online provider of accredited TAFE courses available to study at home, with a huge variety of choices for students.

Wherever you choose to study, some form of tertiary qualification is an excellent start into the workforce, as those with tertiary qualifications are better placed to do well in their industry.
