Human resources officers can expect a varied career, ranging from handling an employee's personal crisis to running a recruitment drive for a multinational organisation.
When searching for a job in human resources, the demands can seem daunting.
Companies often require previous experience in the field or official certification. Despite this, there are numerous study pathways that can lead to a successful career in HR.
Matheson Vaughn studied a Bachelor of Business, Double Major in Human Resource Management and Business Management at the University of Newcastle.
The course provides a wide knowledge base from which to draw on, “We were comparing the ideas behind IR (Industrial Relations) and HRM (Human Resources Management) and learnt a lot about people management and the laws behind employment,” he says.
While Mr Vaughn began his degree without a major, the strong theory component of HR drew him in, “I started my degree as a general business degree and majored in that because that was what I was most interested in. I have always had a passion for business and the HR theory courses were very useful.”
Before enrolling at Newcastle University, Mr Vaughn also considered undertaking a Business course at TAFE, “It offered the same integral aspects workplace planning, induction, the management of employee skills and the like.”
A background in business and HR can also lead to other careers. Since completing his qualifications, Mr Vaughn has successfully landed a job as a marketing manager in a software firm.
