Overview of Sports Management
Sports management is a rewarding industry for people who love sports and want to get involved in an organisational and behind-the-scenes capacity.
Jobs in sports management include marketing, media management, sports administration, sports promotion and sports agent. |
Studying Sports Management
There are many degrees you can take to become a sports manager or administrator; it’s not restricted to a sports management course. You can study business, commerce, public relations, sport and recreation, finance, accounting and marketing too.
Specialist sports management courses teach you universal business skills and how to apply them to the sports industry, sport arbitration, media and marketing.
To become a sports agent, you need to become accredited with the relevant sporting body, like the AFL Players Association, the Rugby League Accredited Player Agent scheme or FIBA (basketball).
Generally you need to fill in an application form, and do an induction course and/or exam. Previous study qualifications and existing contacts in business and sports will help your application.
Careers in Sports Management
Sports managers and administrators can work with government sports departments, sporting leagues of any size, sports teams and individuals.
Sports agents take care of player negotiations and may be involved in estate planning, tax and financial planning, marketing and endorsements, and post-playing career planning.
Jobs in this field are expected to grow very strongly through 2015, according to the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR).
DEEWR statistics also show that sports administrators earn an average of $1346 a week.
Skills needed in Sports Management
Sports managers and agents need to have excellent negotiation and business skills, and they should always be one step ahead of others.
People in sports administration tend to be good at multitasking, organising, working with people and dealing with numbers.
