Overview of Vocational Teaching

Vocational teachers teach prescribed courses to adults at TAFE or other training institutions such as school-based programs. When working in schools, vocational education and training involves preparing students for the world of work through practical training.

They are involved in lecturing and mentoring students in an area of specialisation, and are closely linked with apprenticeship programs. Within vocational education, focus is put on practical elements of learning within a specialised area of study.

Studying Vocational Teaching

Those who wish to work in vocational education and training must possess tertiary qualifications. The most common education course qualifications are an Education bachelor’s degree at university, or a postgraduate diploma specialising in adult education. Many universities offer a specialised degree in Adult and Vocational Education, which is usually around three to four years in duration.

Most bachelor degrees in education include a practical aspect of learning in which students spend time teaching in real classrooms under supervision.

Careers in Vocational Teaching

Vocational teachers are able to work in a number of places, from TAFE, to specialised training schools, even to teaching vocational skills within schools. Wages therefore vary depending on the role.

Vocational teachers can have shorter in class hours than some other educational roles, but a lot of time is spent creating lesson plans, assessments, and marking. Vocational teachers must also meet school and industry needs within the framework of curriculum requirements.

Skills needed in Vocational Teaching

Organisational and creative skills are important in vocational teaching, when planning lesson plans and teaching models. A passion for the area of expertise is also vital. Patience and great communication skills are a must in vocational education.
