Studying Agriculture
Agricultural science , like most science courses, requires a prerequisite of understanding and passes in mathematics, chemistry and biology.
Agricultural science students are also expected to undertake environmental, businesses, law and economics modules to understand the operating systems impacting the field of agriculture and agribusinesses.
An agriculture degree lasts from between three to four years and covers natural resource management, land management and food resources, agribusiness, plant and animals genetics and breeding and animal and marine life science.
Internships and work placements are also part of the agricultural degree programmes. Students are also expected to undertake certain vaccinations against common diseases that they may be exposed to during the course of their work placements.
Postgraduate options in agriculture science are available as agriculture masters in specific and interdisciplinary programmes, and are offered as either via coursework or research methods.
Technical and Further Education (TAFE) studies are available at selected TAFE institutes where certificates and diplomas are awarded for studies in animal management and farming.
Careers in Agriculture
Agricultural science graduates can explore several career paths in the public and private sectors. Agricultural sciences graduates have found employment as agronomists, animal nutritionists, researchers in agricultural development, farming consultants and horticulturist.
Skills needed in Agriculture
Agricultural science graduates should also be organised, meticulous and detailed, as research data collection, compilation and analysis are required in their daily course of work.
