Overview of Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy is a branch of natural therapies which provides psychological and physical wellbeing through the application of essential oils in a number of ways. These essential oils are extracted from aromatic plants in order to treat a range of issues.
Aromatherapy seeks to treat problems using methods such as aerial diffusion, direct inhalation by the patient, or topical applications using massages or baths. Studying Aromatherapy
Studying an aromatherapy course is available at a range of providers, such as a natural therapies college or TAFE. Qualifications in Aromatherapy are available at the Certificate or Diploma level, and can be achieved in a year.
Most aromatherapy courses cover topics such as the history and theory behind aromatherapy, as well as the pharmacology and chemistry of aromatherapy oils, as well as massage techniques.
There is also usually a practical element involving clinical training under supervision.
Careers in Aromatherapy
After completing a course, aromatherapists can work with patients to create combinations of oils to help treat health problems in their clients.
They may also work in retail, selling oils and combinations of oils to practicing therapists. Another specialty within aromatherapy is massage therapists, who use essential oils combined with massage.

Skills needed in Aromatherapy
Aromatherapists need to have good communication and listening skills to in order to consult with, understand and treat their patients properly.
Similarly, having a logical and clear understanding of scientific and chemical principals is important in aromatherapy. Having a commitment to and a belief in preventative medicine in combination with traditional medicines is essential.
