Building apprentice Overview of Building

Building courses equip you with the technical knowledge for a career in the building and construction industries.

On top of the usual modules, some education institutions are also incorporating innovative modules such as environmental sustainability and renewable energy units into their building courses.

Studying Building

Building courses are offered as vocational education, or as a building apprenticeship or building traineeship programme at Technical and Further Education (TAFE) institutions and private training centres. Building courses run from between 15 weeks to two years, depending on your specialisation.

Building courses cover safety knowledge on building structures, scaffolding, bricklaying, painting and building quality control management. Some TAFE institutions also provide introductory carpentry courses to its building students.

Building students who are undergoing apprenticeship and traineeship programmes may spend part of their curriculum working under practicing building and construction companies.

Some modules such as project management may be delivered through correspondence learning.

There are no academic requirements set for entry into a building course at most TAFE institutions, although you must have basic literacy and numeracy skills.

Building students can pursue civil engineering, applied science in construction or architectural engineering programmes depending on their academic and technical assessments.

Careers in Building

Building jobs include brick-laying, building and demolition, scaffolding erection and installation, solid plastering and painting and decorating.

Builders and tradesman are required to be certified before being able to undertake employment. You may also require a Construction General Induction Competency certificate before working on a construction projection.

Skills needed in Building

You must be able to read floor plans, have occupational health and safety knowledge and strong project management skills.
