Overview of Zoology

Zoology is the study of whole organisms, such as marine life, animals, insects, plants and their reproduction patterns. Zoology studies also provide an insight into the functions, behaviours and genetic evolution of living organisms.

Zoology is not just confined to the study of animals, but also the environments and ecology systems of which animals, and insects live in, be it in nature or a captive environment.

Studying Zoology

Zoology is a specialised branch under the broader field of biology.

Often offered as a major in an undergraduate degree programme, students taking a zoology degree or major are expected to be familiar with chemistry, biology, and genetics. Interdisciplinary subjects outside of zoology can also be factored into a degree.

Zoology degrees take from between three to four years to complete. The basic entry requirements to an undergraduate science programme would be a Year-12 qualification or its equivalent, and with passes in mathematics, physics, chemistry and English.

Foundation courses in general sciences and mathematics are also available in private colleges and selected Technical and Further Education (TAFE) institutions. Internship programmes are usually laboratory-based or off-site training where students will acquire practical zoological knowledge.

Postgraduate options would include taking on an honours programme, which is subject to a minimum grade point average (GPA), or a Masters in Sciences or doctorate programme, where students would gain a zoology PhD.

Graduates can choose to specialise in other science-related subjects such as bio-informatics or biochemistry.

Careers in Zoology

Zoologists can take on jobs in the public and private sectors offering expertise in botany and agriculture management, marine life conservation, veterinary hospitals and wildlife conservation.

For those who are interested in animal breeding, it will be beneficial to undertake modules on nutrition and animals’ reproductive systems.

Individuals with zoology degrees are also able to pursue laboratory-based research and technical jobs.

Skills needed in Zoology

Other than a love for animals, strong mathematics and English language skills are critical for a career as a zoologist.
