Overview of Drafting
While there are many types of drafters, here we will focus on architectural drafters. These drafters work closely with architects to produce technical drawings of houses and building designs using Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software.
Drafters are an integral part of building design, taking the designs that architects create through to a technical standard accessible to other building professionals. |
Studying Drafting
There are many ways to study drafting in Australia. Firstly, students can study at TAFE at a diploma or certificate level, to achieve a Diploma or Certificate of Architectural Drafting. There are also degrees at university available with a focus on architecture and drafting.
Whilst both TAFE and university courses offer both a theoretical and practical approach, TAFE courses tend to focus more on the foundations of technical drawing and practical skills.
Finally, it is also a possibility to undertake an apprenticeship in drafting, and be paid for your study.
Careers in Drafting
Drafters can work in a wide range of industries, including government industries, building construction, and technical services. There are also opportunities to specialise as a building designer, or alternatively study further to become an architect.
Whilst most of the time drafters work in an office, there is also some time spent outdoors during site inspections. Drafting can be a very satisfying career, allowing you to see the physical results of designs go from paper to reality.
According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the average draftsman earns just over $1,300 per week in Australia.
Skills needed in Drafting
Drafting design requires creativity and analytical thinking in order to transform rough sketches and plans into technical documents. Having some artistic talent is useful, as well as an enjoyment of technical drawing. An ability to work with computers and computer software is also valuable.
