Overview of Early Childhood Teaching
Early childhood teachers are involved in conducting activities and education for children at a preschool or kindergarten level. Early childhood education is involved more with creativity, self expression, and exploring the world than with children at older levels.
Children are encouraged with a variety of activities and play to develop better motor skills, social skills, and self confidence.
There is also a level of involvement past teaching the children, such as staying past school hours to organise lessons, as well as meeting with parents and other teachers to discuss development. |
Studying Early Childhood Teaching
In order to work as a preschool teacher in Australia, it is necessary to have a university degree with specialised knowledge in early childhood teaching. There are two ways to achieve this.
You can undertake a four-year undergraduate early childhood qualification, like a Bachelor in Early Childhood Education, or enroll in a ‘pathways’ course through TAFE, with those receiving a diploma continuing on to complete a university degree.
An education degree at university is usually four years in duration, and involves a practical fieldwork element, in which students complete a portion of their degree in real classrooms.
Careers in Early Childhood Teaching
According to joboutlook.gov.au, job prospects for kindergarten and pre-primary school teachers are good, with average weekly earnings at $962.
There is demand for teachers at all levels in Australia, especially in rural areas.
Skills needed in Early Childhood Teaching
An obvious skill in this kind of job is understanding and enjoyment of working with small children. Similarly, sound literacy and numeracy skills are important. Communication skills are vital too, as early childhood teaching jobs require the ability to talk to and relate to children, their parents, and other teachers.
Good organisational skills are also a bonus when structuring classes, as well as problem solving skills.
