Teacher Overview of School Principal

School principals are responsible for coordinating both administrative and education needs within schools, either at a primary, intermediate, or secondary level. School principals are vital to ensuring the day to day processes of schools happen smoothly.

Principals usually manage the educational processes of a school based on curriculum needs set by educational authorities, and implement processes to monitor student performance and enrolments. School principals are also involved in the process of selecting students, as well as hiring staff to ensure quality education.

Studying School Principal

School principals must have at least an undergraduate degree in education, or an undergraduate degree plus a graduate diploma. A Bachelor’s degree in Education is usually three to four years in duration. Most schools recruiting a principal also expect potential candidates to have experience as teachers in order to understand the processes involved.

When studying education at university, most institutions will include a practical element in the coursework, which requires students to spend time teaching a real classroom.

Careers as a School Principal

Educational providers are always in demand, and school principals are no exception. It is a full time position and many school principal jobs require working overtime, and on weekends. A big part of the role is meeting with parents and teachers, as well as spending time on paperwork and planning.

Most school principals come to the role after at least a few years as a teacher in some capacity.

Skills needed as a School Principal

School principals should have a good knowledge of teaching and education, in order to understand the processes involved in implementing curriculum requirements and classroom training.

Good communication skills are essential for a career as a principal, while leadership and an ability to work under pressure are also important qualities.
