Overview of Fine Arts and Crafts

The broad spectrum of fine arts and crafts covers all aspects of the contemporary creative world. From drawing courses, pottery courses, photography and art classes, there is definitely a place for anybody wanting to explore their talents. Courses are diverse and include degrees, short courses, diplomas, certificates and even include evening leisure art classes.

Students could pursue careers as an artist, designer, jeweller, sculptor, photographer or even filmmaker depending on which area you wish to specialise in. Many artists work in studios or are self-employed.

Studying Fine Arts and Crafts

Courses range from undergraduate to graduate fine arts degrees which are approximately three years in length and four to five years for a double degree.

Diplomas, short courses and certificates in different areas of art and craft may vary in length between months and years.

If you are interested in studying a degree then a broader course in visual arts, rather than a more specialised course in fine arts may be suitable for you as it enables students to complete it as a double degree together with other areas such as education, arts or business.

Of course, if you are just wishing to complete a course for your own leisure, then there are many art and craft short courses and classes that are available including pottery courses, jewellery making courses, fabric sewing courses, woodwork courses, photography courses, mosaic art coursesand drawing and painting courses.

A craft course will have many practical workshops to help students develop, learn and practice new skills. Handmade craft is very rewarding as it can be sold at craft fairs, markets, festivals or just made for leisure.

Careers in Fine Arts and Crafts

The general industries that many students can find themselves working in include advertising, arts education, art auction houses, curators, exhibition design, multimedia industry work, commercial photography, or theatre.

Generally if a fine arts degree is undertaken, students will have the opportunity to create their own art, learn art theory and techniques as well as being able to visit galleries and exhibitions. Here they may meet gallery directors and critics and will learn the best ways to get noticed in the industry.

A specialised fine art and craft course will enable students to develop their own area of expertise such as photography or painting. This will build towards enhancing a students’ portfolio and help them to become a practising artist when they graduate.

Skills needed in Fine Arts and Crafts

Creativity and a strong passion for the arts are essential for studying and working in this field.
