Studying Games Design
The best way to enter into game design is to study at a tertiary level, either at university or TAFE. Courses offered at TAFE range from the Diploma, to Advanced Diploma, to Certificate levels, and usually require a portfolio to be submitted to be considered for entry.
There are also several university courses available which focus on games design, such as the Bachelor of Design, and the Bachelor of Arts majoring in games design.
These courses aim to teach students technical abilities in art, design and programming through practical and theoretical subjects.
Careers in Games Design
Most game developers specialise in a certain type of game platform like Xbox or Wii. Others focus on certain parts of game development, such as programming, or games testing.
The workplace of game developers is usually a casual one, with T-shirts and thongs often acceptable work-wear. However, it is an industry known for long hours, with higher workloads at peak times of the year.
The average wage for game developers in 2007 was $73,000 per annum according to the game industry salary survey in 2007.
Skills needed in Games Design
A knowledge of gaming and computers is definitely important in this career. Similarly, those with creative flair and an aptitude for drawing are at an advantage.
Communication skills and the ability to adapt to new technologies quickly are an advantage in this industry.
