Studying courses in history is a good way to increase your knowledge in a particular period or event in time and can lead into very different careers in both private and government sectors.

Studying History
The most common qualification in history is a Bachelor of Arts History. This course is three years long alone or four years with added Honours. Subjects include topics in world history and are combined with Arts subjects.
There are also postgraduate university qualifications, such as the Graduate Diploma in Arts History, which is a one-year course useful for those who already hold an undergraduate degree and want to focus in one particular area.
There is also a Masters of Arts in History, which requires students to write a thesis of 30,000 words and is aimed at those who want to develop advanced independent research skills and want to make a published contribution to their particular area of study. Students who wish to undertake further study can also undertake a history PhD.
Careers in History
History as a career is a very broad discipline and can lead into jobs in tourism, library work, museums, as well as government departments of public history or restoration projects.
A lot of history students also develop careers as teachers in primary, secondary or tertiary levels. With research experience, there are jobs as a researcher in government sectors, such as Foreign Affairs and Trade, or in universities or private companies.
Skills needed in History
History as a discipline places a lot of emphasis on reliability and usefulness of sources and you will need strong analytical and research skills.
