Barista Overview of Hospitality

Hospitality management can lead to many career options in the hospitality industry. This includes areas generally concerned with customer service. Hospitality is also about planning and organising events and managing services. Many of the skills required in this industry can be used across different workforce areas.

Cafes, resorts, restaurants and hotels are all potential areas that require the services of hospitality students. There is now a greater demand for tertiary courses in hospitality, with most colleges and universities offering training and work experience.

Studying Hospitality

There are several paths to study hospitality. Courses are available in catering, multicultural hospitality and events management.

Students can complete a hospitality certificate or hospitality diploma. You can also combine a Bachelor of Business with a degree in hospitality management.

An important part of these courses is the practical element. Paid industry internships are common but most experience takes place off the job to begin with. Residential hospitality schools which allow students to work regularly are very popular because they allow you to gain the necessary practical experience that employers often expect from graduates.

Careers in Hospitality

Most careers are heavily based in practical work. Graduates from a degree in hospitality management are usually involved in management positions.

This includes hotel management, restaurant management, festival managers, executive chef positions and cafe owners.

Qualifications in hospitality and tourism can often lead to careers in public relations and business or marketing. The average salary expected for the Australian hospitality, travel and tourism industry is around $52,659.

Skills needed in Hospitality

Skills include the ability to work in a team, strong communication skills, good customer skills, organisational skills, ability to work well under pressure, ability to multi-task, knowledge of and experience with technical skills.

It's also essential to focus on presentation and grooming.
