Man with computer Overview of Information Technology

In an extremely diverse and constantly evolving field, the prospects for Information Technology (IT) jobs are promising. There are a few main areas that IT can branch into, including IT management, business information technology, IT security and management, programming, project management and web design and development.

IT courses are widely available and can be studied in the forms of certificates, diplomas, degrees, masters and there are also a range of short courses and IT training programs available as well.

Studying Information Technology

Generally a student will gain the fundamentals of the hardware and software sides of IT as well as learning the technical attributes such as database design, IT project management, eCommerce and information management. Depending on what course is studied, students can specialise in a particular area of interest or combine IT with a different field such as business or science.

A typical IT degree will be a three or four years in length, while a information technology certificate or information technology diploma will be one or two years in duration.

It is quite common for IT professionals to continue their study throughout their career due to the ever changing nature of this field. It’s crucial that you are always up to date with the latest technology advancements. This is often achieved by completing further IT training.

There are a few certifications that are highly regarded in the IT industry and are often studied as short courses. They include: MCSE (Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer), MCDST (Microsoft Certified Desktop Support Technician) and Cisco Certified Entry Networking Technician (CCENT).

Careers in Information Technology

Depending on experience, skills and the course studied, your career growth and advancement in this field will vary. Industry-specific experience can open many doors which is why some IT courses have work placements included in the course as well.

By studying an IT course, a graduate will typically qualify for membership into certain societies such as the Australian Computer Society and will often have the career prospects of becoming a: business analyst, database developer or administrator, helpdesk or IT support, IT management and security, network engineer, software engineer, project manager and web designer.

Skills needed in Information Technology

If you have a technical mind and love the changing and sometimes challenging world of technology, then this career path is for you. A natural interest in IT is a great start for somebody wanting to learn more and delve into the different areas of this industry.
