Overview of Landscape Architecture
Landscape architects are responsible for the design and implementation of the environment of outdoor and public spaces. Landscape architects also provide a service to the community in transforming industrial and abandoned environments into livable surroundings for communities to enjoy.
Landscape design involves analysing the existing conditions of a landscape, and creating a space for better quality surrounds and thus better quality living. |
Studying Landscape Architecture
Many universities offer specific landscape architecture courses. Most landscape architecture degrees are four years in duration, and offer both theoretical and practical elements. Many also offer landscape design work experience within the course, which is beneficial for job prospects.
Following a landscape architecture course, it is also a requirement to become accredited with the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects.
Careers in Landscape Architecture
Landscape architects can also be involved in projects of hugely diverse scale, from designing a family garden, to landscaping an entire complex. Working in landscape design also involves extensive consultation and planning with local councils, as well as other professionals who are involved in the design process.
Working as a landscape architect allows a great sense of accomplishment, as it is possible to see your designs coming into shape from the ground up. It is also possible to specialise in a variety of services, such as regional planning or site construction.
Landscape architects work in a range of areas, including private firms such as architectural practices, or development companies. Others work with the public sector, with local or state governments. It is also possible to set up your own landscape design firm.
Skills needed in Landscape Architecture
Landscape architects should be creative, with an interest in art and design, as much of the work focuses on creating sketches and site plans for certain designs. An interest in the external and built environments is also a necessity.
Landscape architects should also have good communication skills, as they frequently work in conjunction with a range of different professionals, such as architects, planners, and surveyors. This means that it is important for a landscape architect to be able to work both independently as well as working within a team context.
